چکیده

It is now more than 60 years since the polio epidemic in Denmark in 1952 that led, at least partly, to the development of artificial ventilation.1 In the report of that epidemic, Lassen stated that “A good humidifier is essential: otherwise incrustation of secretions may occur.” Subsequent to the polio epidemic, a heated humidifier was described by Marshall and Spalding in 1953,2 and Drägerwerk AG & Co filed a patent for a heat-and-moisture exchanger (HME) in 1954.3 It is sobering to reflect now that even after 60 y, 2 topics, (1) what makes a good humidifier and (2) which of the 2 types of device, heated humidifier or HME, is better for the patient, are still being debated. To add to the debate, there is the more recent

Humidification during Mechanical Ventilation in the Adult Patient

Humidification of inhaled gases has been standard of care in mechanical ventilation for a long period of time. More than a century ago, a variety of reports described important airway damage by applying dry gases during artificial ventilation. Consequently, respiratory care providers have been utilizing external humidifiers to compensate for the lack of natural humidification mechanisms when th...

Artificial humidification for the mechanically ventilated patient.

Caring for patients who are mechanically ventilated poses many challenges for critical care nurses. It is important to humidify the patient's airways artificially to prevent complications such as ventilator-associated pneumonia. There is no gold standard to determine which type of humidification is best for patients who are artificially ventilated. This article provides an overview of commonly ...

A Case Report of Neonatal Pediculosis: A Simple Challenge, yet Complex

Background: Neonatal pediculosis is a problem the magnitude of which has not been estimated; however, it is regarded as a diagnostic challenge and becomes one of the management challenges for which there are very few managementoptions in terms of age, gestation, and the potential effects of drug toxicity.Case report: Here, we report a case of preterm who developed pediculosis capitis in t...

Insufficient Humidification of Respiratory Gases in Patients Who Are Undergoing Therapeutic Hypothermia at a Paediatric and Adult Intensive Care Unit

For cooled newborn infants, humidifier settings for normothermic condition provide excessive gas humidity because absolute humidity at saturation is temperature-dependent. To assess humidification of respiratory gases in patients who underwent moderate therapeutic hypothermia at a paediatric/adult intensive care unit, 6 patients were studied over 9 times. Three humidifier settings, 37-default (...

Recently published papers: pulmonary care, pandemics, and eugenics in surviving sepsis?

Respiratory failure is one of the leading admission diagnoses on the critical care unit, and the journals have reflected this over the past few months. An understanding of the aetiology of pulmonary sepsis is important but your choice of ventilator gas humidification system is not. There are prophecies of more pandemics, but panic is futile because survival is all down to your genes.
